Can I use Tivo with a Direct TV D11 receiver?
I currently have direct TV service with a D11 Direct TV receiver. I’ve never had Tivo before, but want to get it. I would just swap my direct TV box for a upgrade with built-in Tivo, but I can not do that as I am sharing the Direct TV service and can not alter the bill. I hear you can add a Tivo box and service seperate from the Direct TV box.
Will the Tivo box control the Direct TV box? I read where you can connect the boxes, but people had problems with my particular Direct TV box (D11) becuase of the usb port rather than a serial port on the back. Is that still a problem or has Tivo upgraded their box to work with the Direct TV D11?
I would like to know that I can replace the Direct TV remote with the new Tivo remote.
Any other thoughts on my situation are apprishiated. Thanks!
I am not sure what you mean by you are sharing the DirecTV service. UNLESS you are sharing a service with a landlord or something that has the service and they have a D!! for you to use.
I am not positive if the D11 is compatible with a Series2 or Series2 DT (Dual Tuner), I know each of them need to use a Serial Port usually found on the back side of the DVR/Receivers so that it can change channels on the receiver. The Serial port is a small port, it looks like it is made for headphone mini jacks. Are you sure it is not there? All of my DirecTV recievers and DirecTV Tivo units have them. I have use of them in case I need to fix something with the software using the BASH prompt (In case I cannot log into the DirecTivo via TELNET/FTP.
If this is NOT the case then you can purchase a UPGRADED DirecTV Tivo and connect it to your coaxials, install the card from the D11, you may need to call DirecTV to let them know you are using a DirecTV Tivo instead of the Piece of S-_- D11. If you can hold out for a little while DirecTV and Tivo are working on some deal to fix the DirecTV HR20 boxes with Tivo supplying the software upgrades. You might be lucky and DirecTV might get smart and use the Tivo software for their other units.
