cable internet home networking

What category of patch cable should I use for my home network?
I want to connect 2 desktops at home together and both to the internet. Wireless doesn’t work very good because there are a lot of walls between the 2. So I am planning on putting the router in somewhat of a central spot and from there I’m going to wire them together for faster network speeds.
1 cable will be ~42 feet and the other ~56 feet so I will probably get a 50′ and a 75′ cable. One of my PC’s has gigabit ethernet and the other does not. I am thinking that my network will only be as capable as my PC with the lesser ethernet(100mbps or something).
Oh yeah also my router is currently still a wireless b router.
Is it worth it to get Cat6?
If both of my PC’s had gigabit ethernet would it make a difference if my router did not have gigabit?
Yes, yes, yes, no, and yes… Just kidding… Without a gigabit router and lan cards, it will top out at the 100 mbps… Cat 5 or 6 cable is fine, 6 is better, but even at 75′ run, 5 will work fine for 100mbps. It’s only as fast as the weakest link.
Don’t wory, unless you are trying to copy 4.7Gb movies from 1 PC to another, the 100mbps is fine.
